It's a great place to work or live.Houston started as a small trading post run by two brothers. It remained a sleepy cattle town for the first several decades of its existence. Black gold was discovered in 1901, and the city was never the same after that, and once air-conditioning was widely available, people found it an irresistible place to work and live. Oil was the center of the city's economy until 1985, when prices plummeted. Fortunately, Houston has a diversified economy. Its port is home to hundreds of industries, and more and more business are calling Houston home. Today Houston is two million residents strong. One of Houston 's charms is its unique neighborhoods. The Downtown area has seen a major renaissance, with an expanding convention center, new basketball arena and numerous new office towers being built. Midtown Houston is south of downtown. It's community oriented, creating a nice hybrid of family and urban living. Montrose is a truly hip neighborhood and home to local artists, actors, musicians and students. It's also the center of Houston 's gay community. The East End is a Hispanic community with authentic Mexican restaurants, colorful murals, the Orange Show folk art museum, the Lady of Guadalupe Church and Talento Bilingue de Houston . The Heights is home to some of Houston 's oldest homes. There are seasonal festivals throughout the year, and there are some great antique shops and small businesses in the area. Houston doesn't lack for things to do. It has an excellent cultural scene, with several theater venues and resident ballet and opera companies and a symphony orchestra. There's great sports, with professional NBA, WNBA, NFL and baseball teams in the area. There are also over 100 golf courses to enjoy.Houston has a flair for urban living in a friendly atmosphere. It's a city that knows how to have fun, how to relax, and how to make money. It's sprawl makes it a little hard to navigate but well worth the effort to explore its treasures.
